Stablecoins Are Entering the “Distribution Decade”

Stablecoins’ headline numbers keep breaking records. In 2024 they moved $27.6 trillion (7.7 % more than Visa and Mastercard combined).

Yet scratch beneath that headline and you find a striking reality check: only about 7% of those transfers are real payments, the rest being exchange or bot activity. Zoom in further and it gets starker (cross-border payments account for < 1 % of total global flows today).

This gap between capacity and utility is precisely why the coming ten years will be the Decade of Distribution. The underlying tech works, and the regulatory runway is clear, but now every issuer and blockchain native platform is hunting for trusted on- and off-ramps that convert on-chain liquidity into everyday money movement.

Regulation across all continents removes the last excuse

Europe

  • European Union: MiCA is live, giving euro-stablecoins a single passport across 27 states.
  • United Kingdom: Registration framework with draft proposals underway.
  • Switzerland: DLT/Blockchain act has been in place since 2021.

Americas

  • United States: On 18 July 2025 President Trump signed the GENIUS Act, the first federal framework for payment stablecoins, mandating 1:1 liquid reserves and monthly attestations.
  • Canada: Crypto regulation has been strengthened with pre-registration undertakings and stablecoin guidance.
  • Brazil: Brazilian Virtual Assets Law (BVAL).
  • Mexico: 2018 Fintech Law with virtual assets chapter including AML rules.

APAC

  • Singapore: 2024 amendments to the Payment Services Act, widening VASP licencing.
  • Japan: 2025 amendments to the Payment Services Act, including stablecoins, custody and domestic-hold mandates.
  • Hong Kong: SFC licencing regime for Virtual-Asset Trading Platforms.
  • Australia: Digital Asset Platform licencing proposal (2025).

Middle East

  • UAE: Multi-layer framework including VARA, FSRA and SCA.
  • Bahrain: Central Bank of Bahrain Crypto-Assets Module.

Africa

  • Nigeria: SEC Rules of Issuance, Offering Platforms and Custody of Digital Assets.
  • South Africa: FSCA licence requirement for Crypto-Asset FSPs under FAIS.

With licencing certainty in the world’s two largest currency zones and growing actions from regulators across all continents, enterprises finally have legal cover to hold and settle digital fiat.

On/Off-ramps: two sides of the same distribution coin

Because OpenPayd is stablecoin-agnostic, we integrate multiple tokens into the same infrastructure. That infrastructure consists of:

First and last mile: One API mints or redeems fiat-backed stablecoins and pays out via SEPA, Faster Payments, SWIFT or 60+ real-time payment rails.

Token choice: USDC and RLUSD are already live via our partnerships with Circle and Ripple; others will be added within the same workflow.

Licencing infrastructure: A growing network of global licencing, covering both traditional and blockchain backed financial services.

Technology infrastructure: API-first platform that provides both automated and self-serve global money movement.

Why distribution matters more than domination

The payment industry learned long ago that reach beats share. Visa succeeded because every POS terminal accepted any issuer’s card. Stablecoins will win when every PSP, wallet and treasury system can issue, move and redeem them through licenced connectors:

  1. Rail-agnostic APIs so treasurers switch between fiat rails and multiple blockchains and stablecoins based on liquidity.
  2. Local, real-time payment rails for predictable settlement into domestic accounts.
  3. Programmability to embed conditional logic (something legacy rails struggle to match).

Where impact lands first: high-cost developing corridors

The global average cost to send a US $200 remittance is 6.62% and in Sub-Saharan Africa it still tops 8%. Stablecoins can cut that to fractions of a percent, so corridors like Europe-Nigeria or Gulf-Philippines feel the benefit well before London-New York.

For major G10 routes, big fintechs and banks already deliver near-instant settlement and single-digit basis points, but only to their largest clients. Stablecoins democratise those wholesale economics, letting any mid-market business access sub-1 % pricing through open distribution rails.

What does this mean for global businesses?

  1. UK e-Commerce platform converts GBP to a regulated stablecoin via OpenPayd.
  2. Value moves on-chain in seconds to Asia.
  3. Supplier triggers off-ramp; we deliver local currency via the domestic instant-payment network.
  4. End-to-end cost <1%, time ≈ minutes and no dependency on which stablecoin was used under the hood.

Accelerants for 2026-30

  • Regulatory clarity – With prudential rules now clear, banks and financial institutions are moving from pilots to production.
  • Real-time settlement demand – In Fireblocks’ State of Stablecoins 2025 survey, 48% of global banks say real-time settlement is the top benefit, and only 10% remain undecided about adoption.
  • Infrastructure interoperability – Fedwire’s ISO 20022 go-live on 14 July 2025 means stablecoin instructions can enter treasury systems over the same schema as SEPA and SWIFT, collapsing integration cost.

The call to partners

Stablecoins have proven they can out-volume Visa, but until distribution rails are everywhere, real-world impact stays below 1% of global cross-border flows. That is the opportunity before us.

OpenPayd will power the next generation of global money movement and management with our rail-agnostic on/off-ramp network. Together we can turn headline volumes into everyday value and deliver instant, low-cost global payments to every business and consumer who still pays 6% for the privilege of moving their own money.
